A brief description of the sector
The Sport and Entertainment Sector (SES) is one of the 19 civil society sectors represented in SANAC. The roles and responsibilities of the sectors are spelled out in the SANAC procedural guidelines and include implementation of the NSP goals and coordination, communication and consensus building within the sector and between sectors. It is the women and men in sport and entertainment who will conceptualise and lead the campaigns in the SES, being both the face and the power behind using sport and entertainment in the battle against HIV and AIDS, TB and STIs. By attracting national and local attention to the issues South Africa faces with regards to HIV and AIDS, the sector aims to successfully connect sport and entertainment celebrity activists and events across the country as well as with activists and events globally to create lasting impact against HIV and AIDS for generations to come.
For the period ending 2011, the SES has agreed to attain the following goals in line with the requirements of the NSP 2007 – 2011:
- The SES will meaningfully and effectively contribute towards the national HIV & AIDS, TB and STI agenda.
- The SES personalities, groups and events to actively promote HIV and AIDS, TB and STI messages.
- The SES will coordinate and leverage a SANAC wide key HIV and AIDS, TB and STI messages in the build up to and during the 2010 FIFA World Cup

Cynthia Tshaka
Cynthia Tshaka is the founder and manager of Sport Heroes Walk Against AIDS. Many know her as the face of SABC’s sports coverage. But there’s more to Cynthia Tshaka that her flashy earrings and glossy smile. She has a burning desire to make a difference in South Africa. And the country has Oprah to thank for her fervour. Having been inspired by the American talk show host, Tshaka set up the Sports Heroes Walk against Aids, which over the last four years has raised around R2,5 million for Aids orphans. While she is doing her bit, Tshaka believes it is everyone in the country’s responsibility to make a difference in the lives of others, no matter how insignificant their efforts might seem. |
